The Wheatland R-II School District is located in central Hickory County and southern Benton County. The district encompasses approximately 125 square miles. The district is in the northern portion of the Missouri Ozarks, and includes parts of Lake Pomme de Terre to the south and east and Lake Truman to the north. The western part of the district consists of agricultural land. The town of Wheatland, the only incorporated town in the district, has a population of 373. Wheatland is located on U. S. Highway 54, approximately 100 miles west of Jefferson City and approximately 75 miles east of the Missouri/Kansas state line.

With 22.3 persons per square mile, Wheatland is a rural district. Tourism and farming provide the economic base for the area, with many of the work force being self-employed. The gorgeous lake area attracts a significant number of retired people, with thirty-seven percent of the population age 60 or over.

The Wheatland R-II School District is a fully accredited school district, winner of the state's Distinction in Performance Award for the 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2006-2007, and 2007-2008 school years.
